WA & MK Watzdorf Pty Ltd entered into partnership with Don McLeod and Associates in 2003 forming McLeod Watzdorf Financial Planning. The partnership made a strategic decision to change its licensee to Securitor Financial Services in 2005 where I am an Authorised Representative. Due to an ever increasing demand for advice on Aged Care, I completed a comprehensive training programme on Strategic Advice for Aged Care in 2015 and am now accredited to provide Advice for Aged Care. I was born in Canada and hold dual nationality with Australia. I have travelled extensively since my youth and on one of these travels fell in love with my Austrian wife of 33 years, who moved with me back to Canada before migrating to Adelaide in 1987. We have 1 son and 4 daughters, all but our youngest either graduated or studying in University. I am a huge fan of the classic rock bands and try not to miss a concert when possible, an interest we share as a family. I also love unique cars and drive my 1957 Coupe De Ville or 2002 Monaro whenever possible. We have done many Outback trips including the Simpson Desert and been to Darwin both on and off the bitumen and always made sure the family had an unforgettable experience.

While still providing investment and structural advice to a growing number of wealth accumulators and retirees, Aged Care Advice has become my real passion. I specialise in helping residents structure assets prior to moving into aged care to minimise the impact on their Legacy. Decisions when entering aged care can be bewildering and costly. I started in the Financial Planning Industry at the age of 18, when I left school and became my father's Personal Assistant when he as the country Financial Planner for Challenge Financial Services for a couple of years. However, I found the travel bug and ended up living and working in Florida for 6 months and then after another stint at home, moved to London for 6 years. During this time Dad left the bank and went out on his own, so I started studying my Financial Diploma in my last year of London, so by the time I came home I started working in business as soon as I got home in early 2007. My sister Kathy was also working in the business as an Adviser and Dad told us we had 3 years to make him redundant! I spent a good 2 years working in the field with Dad, whilst finishing my Advanced Diploma. Going out to all appointments and meeting the country clients so that they would feel comfortable with the transition when Dad was ready to retire. In July 2010, Kathy and I bought into the business and Dad retired in July 2011. Since then we have been running and growing the business and changing to keep up with the legislation and technology. We have very strict processes and procedures in place within the work place as we find this is the most efficient and effective way to run a business. I have recently just had my first child and enjoying being able to have flexibility of the best of both worlds of being a Mum and an Adviser. I still love travelling and having clients all over WA and the east coast allows me to be able to travel and see clients at the same time.

We’re all human and we all get very subjective and emotional about money. We also get busy and distracted. It hit me almost immediately that the biggest value a financial advice professional can add to their client is not only understanding the rules, strategies and legislation (that part is a given). More importantly, if we want to make a fundamental difference to people’s lives, we also need to focus on something people can’t do on their own, something we can totally control and something that actually matters the most – their ‘money behaviour’. And so in 1997, I registered the name Empire Financial Group and worked with him on a contractor basis. It beat flipping burgers as a part time uni job! The financial services world has changed a lot since then, as has my role within it. In the early 2000's, I was responsible for the inception and roll out of the LJ Hooker Superannuation Fund, at the time Australia's largest real estate network with over 500 offices and 5000 staff. This also led to a partnership in rolling out Australia's first ever community based super fund in regional Victoria, with the aim of providing benefits for local community development. After the sale of these funds to a Melbourne based listed company, Empire re-emerged, dealing with individual, family and small business clients, assisting them with building wealth through strategic and goal driven financial planning. Complimenting my work at Empire, I am the WA representative to the Securitor National Advisory Council. I thoroughly enjoy the regular call ups to speak on financial strategy to the various accounting, finance and real estate groups in our network, and associations such as the Institute of Public Accountants. Outside the office, I indulge my interest in politics and am the ongoing Campaign Chairman to a State Government Cabinet Minister.
